Photo calorie counter
Photo calorie counter: snap a meal, get the calories
A photo calorie counter lets you snap a picture of your meal and get an estimate of its calories, protein, carbs and fat, instead of searching a food list. AI Calorie does this in seconds: photograph the plate, check the foods and portions it finds, adjust them and save. Results are estimates.

How does a food photo calorie tracker work?
An AI model looks at the photo, names the foods it recognises and estimates each portion, then returns calories, protein, carbs and fat. You review the list, change a food or portion if it looks wrong, and save it to your diary. Hidden oil, sugar and sauces are the hardest parts to see.
- Open the app and photograph your plate.
- Check the foods and portions the AI suggests.
- Adjust anything that looks off, then save the meal.
Photo logging vs searching a database
| Photo scan (snap and track) | Search a food database | |
|---|---|---|
| Steps for a plate of rice, egg and sambal | 1 photo, then review | Search each item, pick a match, set each portion |
| Best for | Mixed plates, eating out, quick logging | Packaged foods, single ingredients, exact weights |
| Main weakness | Portion size and hidden ingredients are estimated | Slower, and many entries to choose between |
| Your role | Review and correct the AI's estimate | Choose and measure every item yourself |
Is a photo calorie counter accurate?
No photo calorie counter is exact. Portion size, oil, sugar and mixed dishes cause most of the error, so treat each result as an estimate and review it before saving. We have not yet published our own accuracy tests and will not quote an accuracy figure until we have measured one.

What is the best snap photo calorie app?
There is no single best app. Compare how each app logs food, its daily limits or trial, price, privacy and how clearly it shows that numbers are estimates. AI Calorie is one option if you like logging by photo, with a free plan to try. We also compare other apps on sourced, dated pages.

What is an AI food log?
An AI food log is a food diary where AI fills in the entry for you from a photo or a short description, instead of you typing each food. In AI Calorie you photograph or describe a meal, review the foods and numbers, and save it to your daily log, which tracks calories and macros against your goal.
Can I use photo logging on the free plan?
Yes. The free plan includes 1 photo scan, 5 text logs and 2 insights per day. Pro is an optional subscription that raises those daily limits. You can also log by describing a meal in text or by scanning a barcode on packaged food, and you can stay on the free plan as long as you like.
Does AI Calorie also scan barcodes?
Yes. You can scan the barcode on packaged food as well as photograph a meal, so one app covers both a plated meal and a packet from the shop. Barcode results depend on the product being in the food data the app uses. If a product is missing, describe it in text or add it by hand.
What photo logging does not do
- It does not give medical advice, and it is not a diagnosis or treatment tool.
- It does not guarantee exact calories. The numbers are AI estimates for you to review.
- It does not see hidden ingredients such as oil, sugar or coconut milk, so adjust for them when you know them.
