Walking and calories

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

Walking 10,000 steps burns roughly 280 to 560 calories for most adults at a moderate pace, depending on body weight. A 70 kg (154 lb) person burns about 390. Walking faster, climbing hills or carrying a load raises the total. These figures are estimates built on the Compendium of Physical Activities, not exact measurements.

Gross calories for 10,000 steps, assuming a height of 170 cm (step length about 71 cm). Rounded to the nearest 5. Gross includes the calories you would burn at rest during the same time.

These are gross calories (MET x kg x hours). The "extra" calories from walking, above what you would burn sitting, are about 26% lower (the resting 1 MET out of 3.8). For a 70 kg person at a moderate pace that is about 285 extra calories out of 390.

How the calculation works

  1. Distance: steps x step length. We estimate step length as 41.5% of your height, a common rule of thumb. Measure your own for a closer number.
  2. Time: distance divided by walking speed.
  3. Calories: MET x body weight (kg) x time (hours). A MET is the energy cost of an activity relative to resting; 1 MET is about 1 calorie per kg per hour.

What changes the number

  • Body weight: the heavier you are, the more energy each step costs.
  • Pace: faster walking has a higher MET, but you also finish sooner, so the total for the same steps changes less than you might expect.
  • Terrain and load: hills, sand, stairs and a heavy backpack all raise the cost.
  • Step length: a longer stride covers more distance per step, so 10,000 steps takes more time and energy.
  • Your own body: fitness, age and walking style vary. Treat every number here as a range.

Tired of doing the maths by hand?

AI Calorie lets you log a walk in a few taps. Choose Walking, enter the minutes, and the app estimates the calories burned from your weight and time (you can edit the number). Logged exercise lowers your net calories for the day on the home screen.

AI Calorie does not count your steps or sync with a step counter yet. Use your phone or watch for the step count, then log the walk.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps burn 100 calories?

For a 70 kg (154 lb) person walking at a moderate pace, about 2,600 steps burn 100 calories. Lighter people need more steps and heavier people need fewer. Pace and step length change the figure too. Use the calculator above to see your own number.

Is walking 10,000 steps a day enough to lose weight?

It can help, but steps alone rarely decide weight loss. For many adults 10,000 steps burns roughly 280 to 560 calories, and what matters is how that compares with what you eat. Pairing walking with a modest calorie deficit and tracking both works best. This is general information, not medical advice.

How far is 10,000 steps?

About 7.1 km (4.4 miles) for a person around 170 cm tall, using a step length of 41.5% of height. Taller people take longer steps and cover more distance, and shorter people cover less. Measure your own step length over a known distance for a closer figure.

How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?

At a moderate 3.0 mph, about 1 hour 28 minutes for someone 170 cm tall. At a brisk 3.7 mph it is about 71 minutes. You do not need to walk it all at once, because steps add up across the day.

Do I burn more calories by walking faster?

Per minute, yes: the 2024 Compendium rates 3.5 to 3.9 mph at 4.8 METs, against 3.8 METs at 2.8 to 3.4 mph. For the same 10,000 steps, faster walking takes less time, so the total changes less. Hills, loads and stairs raise the calories more than speed alone.

Does AI Calorie count my steps?

No. AI Calorie does not count steps or sync with a step counter yet. You can log a walk by choosing Walking and entering the minutes. The app estimates the calories burned from a MET value, your weight and the time, and you can edit the number. Logged exercise lowers your net calories.
