Ideal weight calculator

Ideal weight calculator: four formulas and a healthy range

An ideal weight calculator estimates a target weight from your height and sex. This one shows four classic formulas, Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi, next to the weight range that gives a healthy BMI. They are rough guides built for medicine dosing, not personal health goals.

How do I calculate ideal body weight?

The classic formulas start from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and add a fixed amount for each inch above it. For example, Devine gives 50 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch for men and 45.5 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch for women. The calculator above applies all four formulas for you.

FormulaMen (kg)Women (kg)
Devine (1974)50 + 2.3 per inch over 5 ft45.5 + 2.3 per inch over 5 ft
Robinson (1983)52 + 1.9 per inch49 + 1.7 per inch
Miller (1983)56.2 + 1.41 per inch53.1 + 1.36 per inch
Hamwi (1964)48 + 2.7 per inch45.5 + 2.2 per inch
Base weight at 60 inches plus the amount per extra inch.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

None is best. They were created for drug dosing and give results a few kilograms apart. The Devine formula is the most widely used. For health, a BMI-based healthy range is usually a more useful guide than a single number, because it allows for different builds.

What is a healthy weight for my height?

A healthy weight is generally the range that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, or 18.5 to 22.9 using the cut-offs suggested for Asian populations. The table above shows that range for your height. Your best weight within it depends on your muscle, bone structure, health and how you feel.

See the BMI calculator.

Should I aim for my ideal weight?

An ideal weight formula is a reference point, not a goal you must reach. Weight alone does not show body composition or health, and a healthy weight can sit above or below the formula. Set goals with a doctor or dietitian, and track your trend over weeks rather than days.
