How many calories are in nasi lemak?
A basic regular plate of nasi lemak, with 200 g of coconut rice, one boiled egg, a few peanuts and anchovies and some cucumber, comes to about 555 calories. A small plate is about 385 and a large plate about 770. Sambal and extras such as fried chicken are not included and raise the total.
| Portion | Calories (kcal) | Protein | Carbs | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small plate | about 385 | 13 g | 47 g | 16 g |
| Regular plate | about 555 | 21 g | 64 g | 24 g |
| Large plate | about 770 | 27 g | 95 g | 32 g |
Why do nasi lemak calories vary so much?
Nasi lemak varies because of the rice portion, how much coconut milk goes into the rice, the oil in the sambal and the extras on the side. Fried chicken, rendang, fried egg or a sweet drink can add a large share of the total. Two plates that look alike can differ by hundreds of calories.
Is nasi lemak good for a diet?
Nasi lemak can fit a calorie target if you manage the portion and the extras. A smaller rice portion, a boiled egg, cucumber and a modest amount of sambal keep the total lower, while fried sides and sweet drinks raise it. This is general information, not medical or dietary advice.
How can I lower the calories in nasi lemak?
Use a smaller scoop of rice, choose a boiled egg over fried, take less sambal, skip or share fried extras, and pick an unsweetened drink. These changes reduce the calories without changing the dish much. Weigh the rice if you want a more reliable number.
How we calculated these numbers
We added up the calories and macros of each ingredient using USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy), then multiplied by the gram amounts we assumed for each plate. The coconut milk is our assumption of about 20% of the cooked rice weight. Anchovies use canned anchovy as a proxy for fried ikan bilis, which is not an exact match. Sambal is not included because USDA has no entry for it.
